AUDIO PROBLEMS IN CABLES
Highwire Audio discovered that many of the problems in audio cables are the result of Radio Frequency (RF) noise and ringing in the cables. The ringing is caused by RF reflections from the ends of the cables at the fundamental and harmonic frequencies. Since the RF is above the audio band, it does not show up in normal audio band test measurements and is ignored by many designers.
SOURCES OF RF ENERGY
The sources of the RF in the system include being conducted in from the power lines, received from airborne radiation (radio stations, wireless telephones, etc.), and internally generated within the system. All digital circuits create megahertz square waves which generate broadband RF.
THE HIGHWIRE AUDIO SOLUTION
Ringing is easy to change and hard to kill. The technique that we use to reduce the ringing is to put highly efficient RF absorbers around the cable. The RF absorbers kills the ringing that builds up in the cable.
The RF absorbers are metallic and do not contain any ferrite. We have found that the use of ferrite is not sonically desirable in this application. Ferrite tends to cause a dry analytical sound and thin out the higher frequencies. Highwire RF absorbers are the key to the sound quality of our cables and Powerwraps and are covered under US patent.
BENEFIT - LOWER NOISE
The first main benefit of reducing the RF is reduced noise in the cable. A lower noise floor in the cable provides several benefits.
A lower noise floor allows you to hear more low level and ambient information. A lower noise floor improves the transparency. This also improves the depth of the soundstage and allows you to hear the rear of the soundstage more clearly.
BENEFIT - LOWER BRIGHTNESS AND EDGE
The sonic signatures of audio cables are affected by the standing waves in the cable. This is similar to the standing wave patterns in a listening room establishing the sonic signature of the room. The standing wave patterns in cables are caused by reflections off the ends of the cables at the various natural ringing frequencies of the cables. The ringing in cables builds up into standing waves.
The standing waves caused by this ringing are non-linear at radio frequencies (RF) and can mix down and create intermodulation products in the music. We believe that the intermodulation products are the actual cause of colorations, brightness, and distortion that we hear in complex music reproduction. The Highwire solution is to remove colorations and distortions by removing the ringing and standing waves.
The effect of removing the standing waves is to remove colorations and reduce the distortions and their associated by-products (brightness and edge).
